Frequently Asked Questions

  • There are no prices on your website. Can I afford to work with you?

Well spotted! We don’t publish generic prices because the services we provide are highly dependent on your requirements and the products involved.

For example, if you need a Technical Specification produced for a product launch, the price will depend on such factors as:

    • Product complexity

    • Number of SKUs

    • Whether the products are completely new or existing ones being relaunched with or without modifications

    • Which retailer or retailers you are working with

    • How quickly the job needs to be done

You’ll need to get in touch and tell us more about what you need help with and we’ll get back to you quickly with a quotation that spells out what’s included in the price. You CAN afford to work with us. The bigger question is whether you can afford not to.

  • I’ve always worked with big companies for this type of support. How do I know you can handle my needs?

We know the big companies you are referring to very well. Indeed, we worked for some of them before we set up our business. When you work with us you get the same skills, qualifications and level of experience as when you deal with the best people in those businesses - but you will be dealing with a smaller business that gets to know you and your products and gives a more personalised service.

  • I’ve had your quotation and your services are cheaper than other businesses I’ve used. Does this mean you aren’t as good?

When you buy from some bigger, better-known businesses you pay for the higher costs they have in their business. We don’t have a big office with high overheads, or a team of support staff whose costs bump up the prices we have to charge.

Is the work we do just as good? Absolutely. But don’t take our word for that; our client testimonials and high level of repeat business are proof of how good we are.

  • If I work with such a small team, how can I know that you’ll have the resources I need when I need them?

We have a lot of experience with the ups and downs of demand especially in areas like technical specifications. We know when the main seasonal launch windows are for each supermarket, this means we can prepare for the peaks and troughs of demand.  We carefully plan our working capacity to make sure we don’t over-commit.

When we do have more work than we can comfortably handle, we have a network of highly trusted and qualified associates who can step in to help us out as and when they are needed. And we’ll let you into a secret. The big companies do the same when they are overstretched.

  • I think I could do my own technical specifications. Isn’t it just filling in some forms? How hard can that be?

Specifications are not easy and we have spent years learning how to do them properly. Sure, you can have a go but please be aware that each retailer has their own systems and different requirements, and getting them right is time-consuming and, if you don’t have the experience, can be frustrating and confusing. Please don’t estimate how hard these are to get right.

As a food professional, you’re probably great at coming up with creative product ideas. You might be the person who is a whizz in the factory or a marketing genius. But the chances are, you didn’t go into business to spend days at a time trying to figure out how to do specifications. It wouldn’t be the best use of your time. You can try, but experience shows us that those who decide to have a go, often come back to us later when they’ve admitted defeat. It’s so much better to leave this to the professionals. And if you value your own time, it’s better not to use it doing things like this when we can take on that responsibility for you.

  • Why would I need Authorised Representation (FBO) services?

Post-Brexit, things have become a lot more complicated if you want to sell goods made in a non-EU country into an EU country or vice versa. You’ll need to be able to put a registered address on your packaging, and that address needs to be in the territory where you are selling.

You could set up an office in an appropriate location – but that brings with it a lot of costs, registration, and local taxation issues. You could work through an Importer but that will also be costly and it takes time to find a trusted partner. If you don’t have the resources or the desire to set up a local office or appoint an importer, then Authorised Representation services offer a cost-effective alternative.

We work with another company – CERTLabel - and together we act as a neutral party between the manufacturer and the local authorities. We provide both technical and legislative services including a local address, represent you on legal issues related to your products, update you on relevant regulatory changes, and ensure that your product is aligned with all the legislation in the selling markets.

  • My labels look OK to me. Why do I need your help?

Every week we see products on the shelves of stores around the country that contain errors. Many of these errors are of a type that could lead to product recalls, fines from retailers for non-compliance and, most importantly, they could put the health of consumers at risk. We wish it weren’t true, but it’s not that difficult to find non-compliant labels.

There’s a lot of legislation about the communication you make with your consumers via labels and packaging and it’s taken us many years to build up the detailed legal knowledge required to be able to advise manufacturers on what they need to include, where on the pack, and in what precise wording.

Food law changes all the time, so you need a partner who understands those changes and keeps your packaging compliant. We can check your labels, offer advice before you create them, or take ownership of the whole process up to the point of being able to provide an approved ‘pack copy’ for your packaging designer to work with. We also check the designer's visual interpretation of that guidance.

It's a lot of work. We’re good at it because we do it all the time and we save you money by getting things right in a fraction of the time it takes most people to get them wrong.
