Well-laid out, legally compliant packaging is an essential element of every product.
If you’re a food producer launching your first products, making products for one of the UK supermarkets, or perhaps relaunching a product in new packaging, it’s absolutely a priority to make sure your packaging, labels, and product claims fully comply with the food law of the country in which you will sell.
Product artwork is notoriously difficult to get right and mistakes can be costly. Your pack designer will most likely charge for each modification you ask for, so you won’t want to make a lot of changes. That said, if you get something wrong, it could lead to a lot of wasted packaging and product, a potential product recall, reputational damage, and, most devastating of all, the risk of harm to a consumer.

SJW Technical can review your product artwork and highlight any changes you need to make in order to comply with all the relevant legislation. We can do that using your own specific brand guidelines, those of a client you are working for, or a supermarket that you supply.
We will check the mandatory information. There are many such elements but the main ones are:
- Legal name
- Use of pictorials on the pack
- Field of vision requirement
- Ingredient declarations
- Identification and highlighting of allergens
- Nutrition information
- Storage instructions.
We can also review your recipe/formulation to ensure all ingredients are within permitted levels and to check for any banned ingredients. We can check your products meet the compositional requirements of your intended market. We will check that any health claims you make or imply are legally appropriate.
